Un vrai faussaire (2015)
Directed by Jean-Luc Leon

Drama

Film Synopsis

In 2005, Guy Ribes was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison for forging paintings by the great masters, including Matisse, Picasso, Manet, Chagall and Degas.  Around a hundred paintings thought to be original were later exposed as fakes manufactured by Ribes, but the actual number of forgeries that the artist made in the course of his thirty year long career is likely to be many times greater, perhaps running into several thousand.  Who knows, there may be paintings believed to be authentic hanging in art museums and private collections all over the world which are in fact the handiwork of Guy Ribes.  Ribes had a modest upbringing.  He was brought up by a domineering father and spent his childhood in a short stay hotel.  It was the painter Claude Weisbuch, whom he greatly admired, that inspired him to make a living by copying the work of others.  Now 65, Ribes is as  productive as ever, only now he is careful to put his own name to his paintings...
