The Thin Red Line (1998)
Directed by Terrence Malick

Drama / War

Film Synopsis

In 1942, Witt, a private in the US Army, is leading an idyllic existence among the Melanesian natives in a South Pacific paradise.  So far, this tranquil spot has somehow managed to escape the turmoil of war, but when it arrives it does so with all the fury of Hell.  The island of Guadalcanal becomes the battleground for one of the most frenzied battles between the American and Japanese armies, and Witt soon finds himself caught up in the destructive chaos of modern warfare at its most fearsome and relentless.  Once the conflagration has started, it seems that nothing will put it out.  It will be a fight to the death, and at the end of it paradise will be reduced to smouldering embers soaked in blood....
