Film Synopsis

A young woman is delighted when she finds work as a babysitter at a splendid country house in the south of France.  She is eager to take on her new duties as soon as she can, so she is surprised when her employer, an older man, tells her that the child isn't due to arrive at the house until the next day.  The following day, the child still hasn't shown up and the woman becomes concerned that she has been invited to the house on a false pretext.  Her employer is a strange man - charming yet slightly creepy.  His suspicious behaviour and his habit of telling lies are worrying, and yet the woman finds him inexplicably alluring.

The stranger haunts her, teases her, makes her look a fool, and yet despite all this she still has ambivalent feelings towards him.  As they continue in this vein, the young woman begins to wonder why she was hired as a child minder when there is clearly no child to mind.  Is she here merely for the amusement of a solitary and somewhat pathetic individual who takes some sadistic pleasure in manipulating his carefully chosen victims - or is there another, more subtle reason?  Unable to overcome her fascination for her peculiar employer, the woman continues playing his games, and as she does so she is prompted to reflect on the purpose of her own existence...
