Directed by Jean Dréville

Drama
aka: The Sleeping Sentinel

Film Synopsis

May, 1812.  As Napoléon's army passes by his house en route for Russia, Dr Mathieu, a staunch Republican, is planning to assassinate the emperor with some royalists, Villeroy and Queffelec.  Before he leaves to carry out his plan, the doctor leaves his daughter Mathilde in the care of his servants. Mathilde is being courted by her cousin Nicolas, an artist who greatly admires Napoléon and who one day hopes to join his guard of honour.  In the afternoon, a colonel arrives to requisition the house for the emperor - apparently, the plot to assassinate him at Châlons has been exposed.  Hearing of this, Villeroy places an explosive device in Mathilde's bedroom, but her small brother Toni succeeds in rendering it harmless.  How will Dr Mathieu react to the news that his sworn enemy is lying in his bed?
