Directed by Marius Holst

Drama / Action
aka: Kongen av Bastøy

Film Synopsis

On the small Norwegian island of Bastoy at the start of the 20th century, a strictly run detention centre for delinquent boys welcomes its latest inmate, Erling.  Overseeing the pitiless regime that operates within the prison is Brathen, the bullying housefather who is hated and feared by all, including his staff.  Brathen makes a habit of molesting his young charges, one of whom - a timid wretch named Ivar - drowns himself after being raped.

The violent assault on Ivar is witnessed by another boy, Olav, who promptly reports the matter to the prison governor.  When the latter fails to take any action against Brathen, Olav attacks the housefather, precipitating a mass uprising in the prison.  As the boys go on the rampage, Brathen is duly punished for his crimes, but the rebellion is finally quelled when the military are called in and storm the island.  Olav's desperate flight to safety with Erling ends in tragedy...
