Hank Chinaski earns a crust as a labourer in Los Angeles, doing odd
jobs in warehouses and depots so that he can devote himself to his main
interest, which is writing stories that no one wants to publish.
Along the way, he tries to rein in his addiction to women, alcohol and
gambling.
