Film Synopsis
Mathilde Zasinger is a nine-year-old girl who lives alone with her mother
after her parents' separation. Madame Zasinger's increasingly erratic
behaviour doesn't seem to trouble her devoted daughter, who becomes complicit
in her childish flights of fancy. One day, Mathilde receives an unexpected
gift from her mother - a caged owl - and is delighted when it begins talking
to her. Within no time, the owl is the little girl's closest confidant.
As Madame Zasinger's mental health continues to deteriorate, her ex-husband
becomes ever more concerned about his daughter, but the latter remains unconcerned.
If anything, the bond between mother and daughter intensifies as their shared
fantasies become increasingly extravagant, crossing the line ever more frequently
into a weird blend of madness and fairytale. For some reason, Mathilde
prefers the wild fantasy world of her mother to the one inhabited by her
father and most other grown-ups...
