Film Synopsis
Zayane is 75 years old. Ever since she arrived in France, she has never
set foot outside the neighbourhood where she now lives. One day, she
receives a letter informing her of the death of a man she once knew in Algeria.
In the course of one long day, she sets out to recover a box which the deceased
man bequeathed her. In her absence, her eleven children meet up in
her apartment and discover a part of their mother's life about which they
had been blissfully unaware...
From Jean Renoir to François Truffaut, French cinema has no shortage of truly great filmmakers, each bringing a unique approach to the art of filmmaking.
American film comedy had its heyday in the 1920s and '30s, but it remains an important genre and has given American cinema some of its enduring classics.
With so many great films to choose from, it's nigh on impossible to compile a short-list of the best 15 French films of all time - but here's our feeble attempt to do just that.
The cinema of Japan is noteworthy for its purity, subtlety and visual impact. The films of Ozu, Mizoguchi and Kurosawa are sublime masterpieces of film poetry.
