Bienvenue au Gondwana (2017)
Directed by Mamane

Comedy

Film Synopsis

Julien Franchon is a young lawyer whose inexperience and naivety are the only qualifications he needs to make an effective ministerial attaché for a special mission in Gondwana.  Ostensibly, his role is to oversee a presidential election in this African state, along with six other observers sent by an international commission, to ensure an honest outcome.  In fact, the result of the election is already assured, as the incumbent president is far too valuable to France to be ousted by some haphazard quirk of the ballot box.  As the devious political manoeuvring becomes apparent to him, Julien is surprised to discover that neo-colonialism is still very much alive and kicking in this African backwater.  How could things be otherwise?  The West has always had a vested interest in staying on the best of terms with dictators of all kinds, providing they know what is good for them.  Unfortunately, not everyone is happy with the status quo.  Revolution is in the air and Julien's job is about to get just a little bit more taxing...
