Erich von Stroheim was an Austrian actor, film director, screenwriter and producer whose birth name was Erich Oswald Stroheim. He was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary on 22nd September 1885 and died in Maurepas, France on 12th May 1957, aged 71.His best films as an actor include The Honeymoon (1928), Jean Renoir's La Grande illusion (1937), Christian-Jaque's comedy-thriller Les Disparus de Saint-Agil (1938), Jean Delannoy's Macao, l'enfer du jeu (1939) and Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (1950), and whose best work as a film director include Greed (1924), The Merry Widow (1925) and The Honeymoon (1928).
