Tales of Manhattan (1942)
Directed by Julien Duvivier

Comedy / Drama

Film Synopsis

Five unconnected stories which follow a black tailcoat as it is passed from one owner to another.  In the first, an actor gives his finest ever performance whilst wearing the coat.  In the second, a compromising letter is found in the coat by a woman who discovers her husband's infidelity.  In the third, a struggling composer humiliates himself when the jacket rips whilst he is conducting an orchestra.  In the fourth, an alcoholic attends a college reunion in the jacket and tries to convince everyone that he has made a success of his life.  In the final story, a thief steals the coat from a second-hand shop and uses it to gain admittance to a casino, which he then robs, although he is not the one to profit from his crime...
