Film Synopsis
As she enters her ninth decade, film director Agnès Varda is in a reflective mood as she revisits the various beaches that have impacted on her life and career. From Noirmoutier off the Atlantic coast of France to Sète in the south, from the austere Belgian coast to the sun-drenched beaches of California in the sixties, this most idiosyncratic of filmmakers takes us on a tour of her past, sharing with us her life with her husband Jacques Demy, her involvement in the feminist movement and her numerous overseas excursions. Beaches represent a special place for Varda. They hold so many memories, and they also encapsulate the essence of her art, suggesting a free spirit untamed by convention and the tyranny of fashion.
