Les Inséparables
2008 Drama / Romance
Review
Director Christine Dory marks her feature debut with this compelling
tragicomic portrayal of a fraught romance involving two disparate
individuals – a drug addicted artist who despises bourgeois normality
and an unimaginative woman who sells real estate for a living.
Well they say that opposites attract. Although Dory takes few
risks and seldom departs from the conventional, her film is not without
charm and is convincing in its depiction of a fragile relationship
between two vulnerable and passionate people. Admittedly, the
film loses its momentum near the end as it stumbles towards an
unsatisfying conclusion, but despite that it is still an impressive
directorial first shot.Les Inséparables would be a pretty mundane drama were it not for the contributions of its two lead actors, Guillaume Depardieu and Marie Vialle, who are superlative as the apparently ill-matched couple. In the writing, both characters veer towards caricature, but they acquire a harrowing realism through the nuanced performances of these two fine actors. This was Depardieu’s penultimate screen appearance before his untimely death in October 2008. From the brooding intensity and raw authenticity that the actor brings to his role in this film it is readily apparent that French cinema had lost one of its great talents far, far too soon. © James Travers 2009 Write a review for this film...User Comments
